Regional Festivals — Definition

Definition
Regional festivals are occasions associated with the seasonal life, narratives and cultural practices of particular places and communities. Their regional connection does not make them uniform across a state or confined within its boundaries.
Migration can carry celebrations elsewhere, while changing livelihoods can alter how their meanings are expressed. Some observances follow inherited agrarian or religious calendars; others are modern public programmes presenting older traditions.
Comparison should therefore distinguish region, season, purpose and organisational history, using concrete examples such as the three Bihus, Onam, Pongal and the Hornbill Festival.
