Build a short timeline: deportation to Mandalay in 1907; special Congress session at Calcutta and the first AITUC session in 1920; Simon Commission protest and death in 1928. The purpose is to prevent a correct association from being moved into the wrong year or political setting. His death date is 17 November 1928, distinct from the date of the Lahore protest.

Distinguish an organisation's purpose from a leader's participation in it. Educational work, Congress leadership and trade-union activity do not make those institutions interchangeable. A statement can correctly name Lajpat Rai while attributing the objective of one organisation to another.

Revise the meaning of assertive nationalism through methods and institutions rather than a personality label. Self-help and national education were part of the repertoire. Do not infer that a leader associated with assertive politics rejected all institutional activity or that participation across several arenas proves an unchanged position on every issue throughout a long career.
