Border Security Force — Definition

Definition

The Border Security Force is a Union force principally associated with guarding India's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh and preventing relevant cross-border offences within its lawful mandate. It was established on 1 December 1965, while the Border Security Force Act was enacted in 1968 and came into force in 1969.

Those dates describe different institutional events. BSF's border role does not make it identical to the Army or a general replacement for state police. Understanding the force requires distinguishing guarding, military responsibilities and criminal investigation, together with the legal basis for coordination and any particular powers being discussed.
