Government response to Left Wing Extremism (LWE) refers to India's comprehensive strategy to counter the Naxalite movement through a combination of security operations, development initiatives, and governance reforms.
The response has evolved significantly since the 1960s, moving from purely military approaches to the current SAMADHAN doctrine that emphasizes both security and development. The government recognizes that Naxalism is not just a law and order problem but a complex socio-economic challenge requiring multi-dimensional solutions.
The current approach involves multiple agencies working in coordination - from paramilitary forces conducting operations to development ministries implementing welfare schemes in affected areas. The strategy acknowledges that areas affected by LWE often suffer from historical neglect, poor infrastructure, limited government presence, and inadequate delivery of public services.
Therefore, the government's response includes building roads, schools, hospitals, and communication networks while simultaneously conducting targeted security operations against armed cadres. The approach also emphasizes intelligence gathering, capacity building of state police forces, and creating opportunities for surrender and rehabilitation of former extremists.
