Human Trafficking Networks — Definition

Updated 19 Oct 2026

Definition

Human trafficking concerns conduct directed toward exploitation through the elements defined in the applicable law. It is not synonymous with migration, an irregular border crossing or a missing-person report.

Trafficking can occur within a country, and initial agreement to travel does not settle the legal treatment of later exploitation. India's BNS section 143 provides the current statutory reference discussed here.

International Protocol definitions supply a related framework, but their rules must be identified separately rather than assumed to reproduce domestic wording. Protection and reliable evidence are central to an effective response.
