Communalism in India refers to the political exploitation of religious identities to create divisions between different religious communities, primarily Hindus and Muslims. To understand its historical roots, imagine India as a diverse society where different religious communities coexisted for centuries with occasional conflicts, but without systematic political division based on religion.

This changed dramatically during British colonial rule (1757-1947), when administrative policies began categorizing Indians primarily by their religious identity rather than by region, language, or occupation.

The British introduced separate electorates in 1909, meaning Muslims would vote only for Muslim candidates and Hindus only for Hindu candidates. This was like dividing a school into separate groups based on religion and making them compete against each other for resources and representation.

Before colonialism, while religious conflicts existed, they were often localized and mixed with political and economic factors. A Hindu king might ally with a Muslim ruler against another Hindu king based on political interests, not religious identity.

However, colonial policies gradually made religion the primary marker of political identity. The 1947 Partition of India into Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan was the culmination of this process, resulting in massive communal violence and displacement of over 10 million people.

After independence, communal tensions continued to manifest in periodic riots and violence, often triggered by political mobilization, economic competition, or symbolic issues like religious sites. Understanding these historical roots is crucial because they explain why communal tensions persist in modern India despite constitutional secularism and legal protections for minorities.
