Imagine you have a spring. If you pull it, it stretches. If you push it, it compresses. In both cases, you're doing work on the spring, and that work isn't lost; it's stored within the spring as a special kind of energy called elastic potential energy. Think of it like charging a battery, but instead of electrical energy, it's mechanical energy stored due to the spring's change in shape.

This energy is 'potential' because it has the 'potential' to do work. When you release the stretched or compressed spring, it snaps back to its original length, and in doing so, it can push or pull something else. For example, a stretched rubber band can launch a paper airplane, or a compressed spring in a toy gun can fire a dart. The energy stored in the spring is what powers these actions.

The key idea here is 'elasticity.' An elastic object is one that returns to its original shape after being deformed, provided the deformation isn't too extreme. Springs, rubber bands, and even the bones and muscles in our bodies exhibit elasticity to some extent.

When you deform an elastic object, internal forces, called restoring forces, try to bring it back to its original state. You have to work against these restoring forces to deform the object, and that work is precisely what gets stored as elastic potential energy.

For simple elastic objects like an ideal spring, the amount of restoring force is directly proportional to how much you stretch or compress it. This relationship is known as Hooke's Law. The more you stretch or compress a spring, the greater the restoring force, and consequently, the more work you do and the more elastic potential energy you store.

This energy is always positive, as work must be done to deform the object from its equilibrium position, regardless of the direction of deformation (stretch or compression).
