Imagine you're pushing a heavy box across a room. You might push harder at some moments and less hard at others, or even stop for a brief rest. The 'power' you're exerting changes constantly. Now, if we want to know, on average, how quickly you were doing work over the entire time you were pushing the box, we use the concept of 'average power'.

In simple terms, average power is the total amount of work you do (or the total energy you use or produce) divided by the total time it took you to do that work. Think of it like this: if you lift a certain weight to a certain height, you've done a specific amount of work. If you do it quickly, you're powerful. If you do it slowly, you're less powerful. Average power helps us quantify this 'quickness' over a period where the actual rate might not be constant.

Let's break it down: 'Work' in physics means applying a force to an object and moving it a certain distance in the direction of the force. 'Energy' is the capacity to do work. So, when we talk about 'rate of doing work' or 'rate of energy transfer', we're essentially asking 'how much work is done per unit of time?' or 'how much energy is transferred per unit of time?'

If you do 100 Joules of work in 10 seconds, your average power is 100,J/10,s=10,J/s100,\text{J} / 10,\text{s} = 10,\text{J/s}. The unit 'Joule per second' is so common that it has its own name: the 'Watt' (W). So, your average power would be 10 Watts.

Average power is particularly useful when the force applied, or the velocity of the object, or both, are changing over time. For instance, a car engine doesn't always produce the same power; it varies with acceleration, gear changes, and road conditions.

But over a trip, we can calculate the average power output of the engine by looking at the total work it did (e.g., moving the car against friction and air resistance, changing its kinetic energy) and dividing by the total time of the trip.

It gives us a good overall picture without getting bogged down in the momentary ups and downs.
