Escape Velocity — Prelims Strategy

Prelims Strategy

To tackle NEET questions on escape velocity effectively, a systematic approach is crucial. Firstly, memorize both forms of the escape velocity formula: ve=2GMRv_e = \sqrt{\frac{2GM}{R}} and ve=2gRv_e = \sqrt{2gR}.

Understand when to use each. For numerical problems, always write down the given values with units and convert them to SI units if necessary. Pay close attention to proportional changes (e.g., if mass doubles, radius halves).

When dealing with ratios, set up the ratio of the formulas and cancel out common terms before substituting values. For energy-related questions, always start with the principle of conservation of mechanical energy (Ei=EfE_i = E_f).

Remember that for escape, Ef=0E_f = 0 at infinity. A common trap is confusing escape velocity with orbital velocity; clearly distinguish their definitions, formulas, and the factor of 2\sqrt{2} difference.

Practice questions involving the residual velocity when launched with more than vev_e. Always double-check calculations, especially square roots and powers. For conceptual questions, recall that escape velocity is independent of the mass of the projectile and the direction of launch (in the absence of air resistance).
