Pascal's Law — Definition

Definition

Imagine you have a balloon filled with water, and you poke a tiny hole in it. If you then squeeze the balloon anywhere, water squirts out of that hole. Now, imagine you poke many tiny holes all over the balloon.

If you squeeze it again, water squirts out of *all* the holes with the same force. This simple observation is a great way to visualize Pascal's Law. In more formal terms, Pascal's Law tells us something very important about how pressure behaves in a fluid that is enclosed and not moving (a 'static' fluid).

It says that if you apply pressure to any part of this enclosed fluid, that exact same amount of pressure increase will be felt everywhere else in the fluid, and also by the walls of the container holding the fluid.

Think of it like this: the fluid acts as a perfect messenger, carrying the 'message' of pressure equally in all directions. It doesn't matter where you push on the fluid; the effect of that push (the pressure) is distributed uniformly throughout.

This is why, in a hydraulic system, a small force applied over a small area can create a much larger force over a larger area. The pressure itself remains constant throughout the fluid, but because force is pressure multiplied by area (F=P×AF = P \times A), if the area changes, the force must also change proportionally to maintain that constant pressure.

This principle is incredibly powerful and is the basis for many technologies we use every day, such as hydraulic brakes in cars, hydraulic lifts that raise heavy vehicles, and even the simple syringe used in medicine.

The key conditions for Pascal's Law to apply are that the fluid must be enclosed, it must be incompressible (meaning its volume doesn't change significantly under pressure, like water), and it must be at rest (static).
