Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on thermal equilibrium, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, master the conceptual definitions: clearly differentiate between heat and temperature, and precisely recall the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics.

Many questions are direct conceptual checks. Secondly, for numerical problems, the core principle is calorimetry: 'heat lost by hot body = heat gained by cold body'. Always ensure you use the correct specific heat capacities and masses.

Pay close attention to units (Joules, calories, Celsius, Kelvin). Convert all temperatures to Kelvin for formulas involving absolute temperature, though for temperature differences, Celsius and Kelvin changes are identical.

When solving, identify the initial temperatures, masses, and specific heats of all interacting substances. Set up the calorimetry equation carefully, assuming a final equilibrium temperature (TfT_f) that will be intermediate between the initial extremes.

Trap options often involve confusing heat with temperature, misapplying the direction of heat flow, or assuming an average temperature without considering specific heats. Always think about the physical process: heat flows from hot to cold until temperatures equalize.
