Imagine you have a tiny, positively charged particle, let's call it a "test charge." Now, imagine there's an invisible force field around other charges, called an electric field. If you want to move our little test charge from one point (say, point A) to another point (point B) within this electric field, you'll either have to do some work, or the field itself will do work on the charge.

Potential difference, often simply called voltage, is essentially the "work per unit charge" required to move that test charge between two points in an electric field. Think of it like this: if you lift a ball from the floor to a table, you do work against gravity.

The table is at a higher gravitational potential than the floor. Similarly, if you move a positive charge from a point of lower electric potential to a point of higher electric potential, you have to do work against the electric field.

Specifically, if you move a unit positive charge (a charge of +1 Coulomb) from point A to point B, the amount of work you do is the potential difference between B and A, denoted as VBVAV_B - V_A. If you move it from B to A, it's VAVBV_A - V_B.

The key is that this work is done *without accelerating* the charge, meaning its kinetic energy doesn't change. This ensures we're only measuring the change in potential energy. The unit for potential difference is the Volt (V).

One Volt means that one Joule of work is done to move one Coulomb of charge between two points. So, 1V=1J/C1\,V = 1\,J/C. A higher potential difference means there's a greater "push" or "pull" available to move charges, which is why it's crucial for driving current in electrical circuits.

It's a scalar quantity, meaning it only has magnitude, not direction. Understanding potential difference is the first step to grasping how batteries work, why current flows, and how electrical energy is stored and used.
