To effectively tackle NEET questions on transformers, a systematic approach is essential:
- Master the Formulas — Memorize and understand the ideal transformer equations: . Also, be proficient with the efficiency formula: . Remember to convert percentage efficiency to decimal for calculations.
- Identify Ideal vs. Real — Pay close attention to whether the problem specifies an 'ideal' transformer or provides efficiency. If ideal, assume 100% efficiency and no losses. If efficiency is given, incorporate it into power calculations.
- Conceptual Clarity — Understand *why* transformers work only with AC. This is a frequently tested concept. Grasp the role of the laminated soft iron core (reducing eddy currents and hysteresis losses) and the purpose of thick copper wires (reducing copper loss).
- Step-up vs. Step-down — Clearly differentiate between step-up () and step-down () transformers. This helps in cross-checking your answers – if you calculate a higher current for a step-up transformer, you know there's an error.
- Unit Consistency — Ensure all quantities are in SI units (Volts, Amperes, Watts, turns are dimensionless). While turns ratios are dimensionless, voltages and currents must be consistent.
- Practice Numerical Problems — Solve a variety of problems involving direct application of formulas, efficiency calculations, and scenarios where losses need to be considered. Pay attention to the wording to correctly identify given and required quantities.
