In simple terms, this formula is a mathematical tool that tells us how strong a lens will be (its focal length) based on three main things: first, the material the lens is made from (like glass or plastic), which is described by its 'refractive index'; second, the material surrounding the lens (usually air or water), also described by its refractive index; and third, the curvature or 'roundness' of the two surfaces of the lens.
