Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on lenses, a robust strategy involves several key aspects. Firstly, master sign conventions (Cartesian system) thoroughly. This is the most common source of error in numerical problems.

Always draw a mental (or actual) diagram to visualize the direction of light and measure distances accordingly. Secondly, memorize and understand the lens formula (rac1v1u=1frac{1}{v} - \frac{1}{u} = \frac{1}{f}) and the magnification formula (m=vu=hhm = \frac{v}{u} = \frac{h'}{h}).

Practice applying these with correct signs for u,v,fu, v, f. Thirdly, understand the Lens Maker's Formula (rac{1}{f} = (\frac{n_2}{n_1} - 1) left( \frac{1}{R_1} - \frac{1}{R_2} \right)) and its implications, especially how focal length changes with the surrounding medium.

Fourthly, practice problems on combinations of lenses, both in contact (Peq=P1+P2P_{eq} = P_1 + P_2) and separated by a distance (Peq=P1+P2dP1P2P_{eq} = P_1 + P_2 - dP_1P_2). Finally, for conceptual questions, be able to quickly recall image characteristics (real/virtual, erect/inverted, magnified/diminished) for different object positions for both convex and concave lenses.

Ray diagrams, though not directly asked, are excellent tools for conceptual clarity and verifying answers. Pay attention to units, especially converting focal length to meters for power calculations.
