Imagine light traveling in a straight line, like a perfectly disciplined soldier marching forward. Now, what happens if this soldier encounters a narrow doorway or a small pillar? Instead of just stopping or casting a sharp shadow, light, being a wave, actually 'bends' around the edges of that doorway or pillar and spreads out.

This bending and spreading of light (or any wave) as it passes through an aperture (an opening) or around an obstacle is what we call diffraction. Think about sound waves: you can hear someone talking from around a corner even if you can't see them.

That's sound diffraction. Similarly, light also diffracts, but because its wavelength is extremely small, we don't usually notice it in everyday situations unless the opening or obstacle is also very small, comparable to the wavelength of light itself.

\n\nThis phenomenon is a direct consequence of light's wave nature, specifically explained by Huygens' principle. According to Huygens, every point on a wavefront acts as a source of secondary spherical wavelets.

When a wavefront encounters an obstacle or an aperture, only certain parts of these wavelets are allowed to propagate. These secondary wavelets then interfere with each other, leading to a new wave pattern that includes light spreading into the 'shadow' region.

\n\nDiffraction patterns are typically characterized by a central bright region (called the central maximum) flanked by alternating dark and bright fringes, but unlike interference fringes, these bright fringes become progressively less intense and narrower as you move away from the center.

The exact pattern depends on the shape and size of the aperture or obstacle. For instance, light passing through a single narrow slit produces a distinct pattern of a wide central bright band with dimmer, narrower bands on either side.

Understanding diffraction is vital in optics, as it sets the fundamental limits on the resolving power of telescopes, microscopes, and even the human eye.
