Definition

Imagine you have a large collection of identical radioactive atoms. These atoms are unstable, meaning they will spontaneously transform into more stable forms by emitting particles or energy. This process is called radioactive decay.

Now, not all atoms decay at the same instant; it's a random process for any single atom. However, for a large collection, we can predict the overall rate of decay. The 'decay constant', symbolized by the Greek letter lambda (λ\lambda), is essentially a measure of how quickly a particular radioactive substance decays.

Think of it as the 'decay speed limit' for that specific type of atom.

More precisely, λ\lambda tells us the probability that any single nucleus will decay in a given unit of time. If λ\lambda is large, it means there's a high probability of decay, and the substance will decay very quickly.

If λ\lambda is small, the probability is low, and the substance will decay slowly, lasting a long time. It's a constant value for a specific radionuclide, independent of external factors like temperature, pressure, or chemical state.

This is a crucial point for NEET aspirants – the decay constant is an intrinsic property of the nucleus itself.

This constant is directly related to other important concepts in radioactivity, such as half-life (T1/2T_{1/2}) and mean life (τ\tau). The half-life is the time it takes for half of the radioactive nuclei in a sample to decay.

A larger decay constant means a shorter half-life, and vice-versa. The relationship is simple: T1/2=ln2λT_{1/2} = \frac{\ln 2}{\lambda}. Similarly, the mean life is the average lifetime of a radioactive nucleus before it decays, and it's simply the reciprocal of the decay constant: τ=1λ\tau = \frac{1}{\lambda}.

Understanding the decay constant is fundamental to solving problems related to radioactive decay, calculating remaining activity, and determining the age of ancient samples through techniques like carbon dating.
