To tackle NEET questions on the decay constant effectively, a multi-pronged strategy is recommended. Firstly, memorize the key formulas and their interrelationships: T1/2=ln2λT_{1/2} = \frac{\ln 2}{\lambda}, τ=1λ\tau = \frac{1}{\lambda}, N=N0eλtN = N_0 e^{-\lambda t}, and A=A0eλtA = A_0 e^{-\lambda t}.

Remember ln20.693\ln 2 \approx 0.693. Secondly, understand the physical meaning of each term. λ\lambda is a rate, T1/2T_{1/2} and τ\tau are times. For numerical problems, pay close attention to units (seconds, minutes, years) and ensure consistency throughout the calculation.

When dealing with exponential decay, if the time given is an exact multiple of the half-life, use the simpler formula N=N0(1/2)nN = N_0 (1/2)^n where n=t/T1/2n = t/T_{1/2}. For other times, the exponential form is necessary.

Be careful with logarithmic calculations; remember ln(1/x)=lnx\ln(1/x) = -\ln x and ln(xy)=ylnx\ln(x^y) = y \ln x. For conceptual questions, always recall that the decay constant is an intrinsic nuclear property, unaffected by external conditions.

Practice a variety of problems, including those that combine concepts like activity and mass, to build confidence.
