Conductors, Insulators, Semiconductors — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For NEET Prelims, a strong conceptual understanding of conductors, insulators, and semiconductors is key. Focus on the energy band theory: clearly differentiate between the valence band, conduction band, and forbidden energy gap.
Memorize the approximate ranges of the forbidden energy gap () for each material type (Conductors: ; Semiconductors: ; Insulators: ).
Pay close attention to how temperature affects the conductivity of each material – a common trap is confusing the behavior of conductors (conductivity decreases with T) with semiconductors (conductivity increases with T).
For conceptual questions, visualize the band diagrams. For numerical problems, ensure you can identify the material type from a given value and relate it to its electrical properties. Practice identifying incorrect statements about these materials, as distractors often swap properties between the categories.
Always re-read the question carefully to avoid misinterpreting 'increase' vs. 'decrease' or 'small' vs. 'large' gaps.
