Greenhouse Effect — Revision Notes
⚡ 30-Second Revision
Revision checked 17 October 2026.
- Incoming solar and outgoing infrared are different pathways.
- Gases absorb and emit infrared.
- Natural and enhanced effects differ.
- Feedback is a response, not the initial driver.
- Ozone depletion is a distinct mechanism.
2-Minute Revision
Earth’s energy balance joins absorbed sunlight with radiation escaping to space. Greenhouse gases alter infrared exchange; albedo alters reflection. Human additions strengthen greenhouse influence. Water vapour can respond to warming and amplify it. Weather variability does not replace long-term climate analysis. Emissions, concentrations and temperature are related but not interchangeable measurements.
5-Minute Revision
Original explanation drill: Compare two changes—darkening a surface and adding an infrared-absorbing atmospheric gas. The first can alter reflected sunlight; the second alters the outgoing-energy pathway.
Explain how each can affect the balance without claiming they are the same mechanism. Then distinguish an annual emissions reduction from a concentration decline, using input and removal as separate parts of the atmospheric balance.
Finish by explaining why one cold week cannot resolve that long-term balance.
Vyyuha Quick Recall
HEAT: Heat input; Emission of infrared; Atmospheric interaction; Temperature response. The four terms organise the mechanism.
