Champaran and Kheda Satyagraha — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Make a two-row comparison before revising personalities. Champaran belongs to Bihar, 1917 and the indigo-planter grievance. Kheda belongs to Gujarat, 1918 and the revenue demand amid agricultural distress. Exchange any one of those components and a plausible-looking statement becomes incorrect. Do not attach an indigo system to Kheda simply because both involved cultivators.
Place the campaigns before nationwide Non-Cooperation, which began in 1920. Chronology questions may ask for a sequence of Gandhi's activities rather than isolated years. Distinguish a local agrarian intervention from a later national programme, even where nonviolent resistance appears in both.
Read outcome statements narrowly. A concession or settlement does not prove that landlordism, revenue collection or rural inequality disappeared. Similarly, enquiry and negotiation are not evidence that no resistance occurred. Questions may test whether you recognise several instruments operating together. Revise the object of protest, the target institution and the method as three separate facts; that is more reliable than recalling a campaign as an undifferentiated example of satyagraha.
