Prelims Strategy

Revise causes in two columns: background pressures and immediate provocations. Place annexation policies, disrupted patronage, agrarian grievances and service complaints in the first; place the cartridge controversy and the sequence of military incidents in the second. This does not make background causes less important: it prevents a statement about timing from becoming a complete explanation.

Keep Awadh's annexation in 1856 distinct from annexations justified through the Doctrine of Lapse. The British presented Awadh's annexation in terms of misgovernment, so a statement attaching the wrong legal justification remains incorrect even if the date and territory are right.

Read claims about religion as claims about both policy and perception. A source reporting fear of conversion is not automatically proof of a single implemented conversion programme. Likewise, do not infer that each social group had the same grievance. Test whether a statement concerns sepoys, rulers, landholders or cultivators, then check whether the policy and consequence actually fit that group and region.
