Dadabhai Naoroji and Drain Theory — UPSC Importance

UPSC Importance Analysis

Drain theory is an important example of early economic nationalism because it connected administrative arrangements with the distribution of income and resources. It challenged an account in which colonial governance was automatically beneficial and Indian poverty could be explained without examining the costs of that governance. For GS I, the value lies in explaining this connection clearly.

The topic also supplies a useful test of conceptual precision. A trade deficit, an import payment and an unrequited colonial transfer are not interchangeable. An answer that identifies the difference can explain why Naoroji's criticism concerned the structure of empire rather than simply the existence of foreign commerce.

Its political importance extends beyond any one estimate. Economic analysis provided a language through which nationalist leaders could connect taxation, expenditure, employment and poverty. It strengthened the case that political control affected material welfare. At the same time, the theory should be presented as a historical argument with specific channels and evidence, not as permission to label every external payment exploitative without examining its counterpart and institutional context.
