Moderate Phase — Definition

Definition

The Moderate phase refers to the early period of the Indian National Congress, conventionally from its foundation in 1885 to the emergence of a stronger assertive current around 1905. Leaders used public meetings, resolutions, petitions, economic criticism and demands for representative institutions to challenge aspects of colonial rule.

Their methods reflected both their political assumptions and the limited organisational reach of the early Congress. “Moderate” describes a historical tendency, not an absence of criticism. Their contribution should be assessed through political education, economic analysis and institutional demands, alongside the limitations of restricted participation and reliance on persuasion within the imperial framework.
