The India-Nepal open border is a unique arrangement that allows citizens of both countries to cross the international boundary freely without passports or visas. This system, established through the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship, permits Indians and Nepalis to live, work, and conduct business in each other's territories with minimal restrictions.

The open border spans approximately 1,751 kilometers, making it one of the longest open international borders in the world. Unlike typical international boundaries that require strict documentation and border controls, the India-Nepal border operates more like internal state boundaries within a country.

Citizens can cross at any point along the border, though there are 22 official crossing points for trade and formal documentation. This arrangement reflects the deep historical, cultural, and social ties between the two nations, rooted in shared traditions, languages, and family relationships that transcend political boundaries.

The open border facilitates not just movement of people but also trade, with goods worth billions of dollars crossing annually. However, this system also presents challenges including security concerns, smuggling, and difficulties in maintaining accurate records of cross-border movement.

The arrangement is based on mutual trust and the principle of special relationship between the two countries, though it has faced periodic tensions due to political disagreements and border disputes. For UPSC aspirants, understanding this concept is crucial as it represents a unique model of bilateral relations and frequently appears in questions related to India's neighborhood policy, international relations, and internal security challenges.
