Sustainable Development Goals — Mains Strategy

Mains Strategy

Open with an integrated-development argument: “SDG implementation requires institutions to coordinate around outcomes that cross sectoral boundaries.” Then choose a concrete issue from the question and trace its connections rather than listing the 17 goals.

Organise the body around localisation, resources, coordination and measurement. Localisation translates broad targets into relevant local priorities and responsibilities. Resources include finance and administrative capacity. Coordination aligns departments whose decisions affect the same outcome. Measurement should include disaggregation so that an improved average does not conceal groups left behind.

Use the SDG India Index as a monitoring example while explaining its limits: a composite score can support comparison but cannot establish causal attribution or replace the underlying indicators. Add one trade-off, such as infrastructure benefits alongside displacement or environmental cost, and propose a way to assess it.

Conclude with clear institutional ownership, credible data and review of distributional results. The global framework becomes useful when it shapes decisions and correction, rather than remaining a set of labels attached to existing projects.
