Regional Literature — Definition

Definition

Regional literature comprises literary works and practices shaped by the languages, histories and experiences of particular communities. It includes written texts and oral forms, and it can circulate beyond administrative boundaries through performance, migration and translation.

A language, its script and its literary tradition are related but distinct. Studying regional literature therefore means examining form, audience, transmission and social context, rather than treating a state as a single uniform culture.

Named works and traditions provide concrete evidence, while careful interpretation recognises that one poem or author cannot represent every voice within a region.
