Social Customs — Definition

Definition

Social customs are shared, socially recognised ways of acting that are transmitted through participation, learning and expectations about appropriate conduct. They can organise everyday interaction or significant events such as marriage, festivals and mourning.

Their force may come from approval, reciprocity, criticism or exclusion rather than a formal legal rule. A personal habit is not automatically a custom, and an established custom does not automatically have unlimited legal validity.

Customs vary across settings and within communities, and they can change as people reinterpret obligations or circumstances shift. Analysis should identify the practice, its participants and its consequences rather than treating tradition as uniform or timeless.
