Prelims Strategy

Build a compact comparison using input, oxygen condition, main output and residue. Composting is aerobic; anaerobic digestion yields biogas and digestate; thermal treatment depends on combustible material and operating conditions. Do not assign gas upgrading to the biological stage itself or assume that energy production certifies the quality of the remaining material.

For suitability statements, examine moisture, contamination and the combustible or biodegradable fraction. Wet waste can impose an energy cost on incineration, while unsuitable contaminants can undermine compost or digestate quality. A claim about waste reduction should specify whether it concerns mass, volume, usable output or final disposal requirements.

For numerical comparisons, trace the balance. If a hundred tonnes enter and eighty emerge as usable material, twenty remain as rejects. Do not count the input as full recovery or add rejects to input as additional material. Compare matching gross or net energy measures. Keep historical technical guidance separate from current regulatory requirements, especially when an option gives an undated numerical threshold.
