Maratha Wars — Definition

The Anglo-Maratha wars were three phases of conflict between the East India Company and Maratha powers from 1775 to 1818. They arose within a political system containing the Peshwa and powerful chiefs whose interests could diverge.
The wars combined succession intervention, dependent alliances and military campaigns. The Treaty of Salbai ended the first phase, while the Treaty of Bassein preceded the second. The final war ended the Peshwaship and established British predominance.
The outcome should not be described as the disappearance of every Maratha ruling house: some survived in subordinate relationships within the emerging colonial order.
