Consequences and Significance — Definition
Definition
The consequences and significance of the Revolt of 1857 include the changes in colonial government after its suppression and the meanings later attached to the uprising. The Government of India Act of 1858 transferred governance from the East India Company to the British Crown.
The Queen's Proclamation announced a revised policy posture towards princes, religious matters and subjects. These changes did not end colonial domination or establish representative self-government. The revolt also influenced military and administrative priorities and became a major reference in Indian historical memory.
Its significance must therefore be assessed across institutions, policy and remembrance rather than inferred solely from military defeat.
