Definition
Sarojini Naidu was a poet, public speaker and political leader whose career connected cultural expression with the Indian freedom movement and public office after independence. She presided over the Congress at Kanpur in 1925 as its first Indian woman president, following Annie Besant's earlier distinction as first woman president.
Her active role included the Dharasana phase of Salt Satyagraha and the Quit India period. She became governor of the United Provinces after independence. Her career demonstrates women's political agency without representing the experiences or opportunities of every woman in the movement.
