Salient Features — Revision Notes

Updated 19 Oct 2026

⚡ 30-Second Revision

  • 1950: the Constitution establishes a democratic republic with enforceable rights and representative government.
  • Parliamentary executive: Article 75(3), collective responsibility to the Lok Sabha.
  • Federal distribution: legislative powers allocated through the constitutional scheme and Seventh Schedule.
  • Rights and Directive Principles differ in enforceability; both inform constitutional governance.
  • Constitutional supremacy limits ordinary political majorities.

2-Minute Revision

Organise salient features by function. Representation supplies democratic authority; the parliamentary system links the executive to legislative confidence; the federal scheme distributes powers; rights constrain public power; Directive Principles guide governance.

Article 32 provides a remedy for Fundamental Rights, while Article 37 makes Directive Principles non-justiciable yet fundamental in governance. A written constitution can contain both firm limits and mechanisms for change.

Do not describe India as having a presidential executive because the President is head of state, or as lacking federalism because the Union has substantial powers. Identify the institution, its function and the relevant qualification.

5-Minute Revision

Connect features rather than reciting labels

Consider a hypothetical welfare law. First ask which legislature has competence under the distribution of powers. Then ask whether the law respects constitutional rights. Its social objective may relate to a Directive Principle, but that objective does not eliminate the need to analyse rights and competence. Finally, consider the political responsibility of the government proposing and implementing it.

Keep common pairs distinct

Head of state and head of government describe different roles. A republic concerns the non-hereditary constitutional head of state; parliamentary responsibility concerns the executive's relationship with the elected House. Federalism concerns the allocation of powers, while decentralisation to local bodies adds another institutional dimension. Judicial review examines constitutional validity; an electoral mandate is political authority within the Constitution.

Build a concise answer

Choose four connected features, give a provision or institutional example for each, and explain one interaction. An answer that links legislative competence, rights review and ministerial responsibility shows how the system works. A list of borrowed features without their Indian operation leaves the central analytical work undone.

Vyyuha Quick Recall

R–E–P–L: Representation authorises; Executive responsibility connects government to the House; Powers are distributed; Limits constrain their exercise.
