India-Bhutan Relations — Revision Notes

Updated 19 Oct 2026

⚡ 30-Second Revision

  • India–Bhutan Friendship Treaty signed on 8 February 2007; entered into force on 2 March 2007.
  • The text reaffirms independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
  • Article 2: cooperation on national interests and no use of territory for activities harmful to the other's security and interests.
  • Article 3 concerns trade and commerce.
  • Cooperation should not be confused with the surrender of sovereign decision-making.

2-Minute Revision

The 2007 Friendship Treaty provides a primary-text anchor for India–Bhutan relations. It updated the 1949 treaty by mutual consent and places friendship within respect for each country's sovereignty. Article 2 addresses close cooperation and harmful use of territory; Article 3 addresses trade and commerce.

Analyse particular projects or diplomatic decisions through their own agreements and evidence rather than treating the friendship treaty as a complete description of every operational arrangement. A durable partnership is assessed through mutual benefit, implementation and confidence, not simply through the number of announcements.

5-Minute Revision

Read the relationship through a project

Imagine a jointly supported infrastructure project. Ask who defines the need, how costs and benefits are allocated, what environmental and social effects require assessment, and how implementation disputes are resolved. These are analytical questions; the treaty's general commitment to friendship does not answer every project-specific detail.

The 2007 treaty establishes broad commitments. A claim about electricity trade, a transport corridor or financial assistance requires the relevant project or sectoral record. Likewise, cooperation on national interests should not be rewritten as unilateral control by one country over the other. The text's recognition of sovereignty is integral to the framework.

Use chronology precisely

Keep the signing date, 8 February 2007, separate from entry into force on 2 March after ratification instruments were exchanged. In a Mains answer, use that treaty anchor, explain one concrete area of cooperation with verified evidence, and assess how reciprocal confidence and implementation sustain the relationship. Avoid inserting an unverified current project figure to make the answer appear more specific.

Vyyuha Quick Recall

S–C–I: Sovereignty respected, Cooperation agreed, Implementation examined. Use the three checks to assess a bilateral initiative.
