Social justice, at its core, is a philosophical concept that asserts the right of all people to equal economic, political, and social opportunities. In the Indian context, as enshrined in its Constitution, it transcends a mere theoretical ideal to become a foundational pillar of governance and societal organization.

It is not merely about treating everyone the same, but about recognizing historical disadvantages and systemic inequalities, and actively working to rectify them. The journey towards social justice in India is deeply intertwined with its colonial past and the deeply entrenched caste system. The framers of the Constitution were acutely aware of the vast disparities and injustices prevalent in Indian society.

They understood that mere formal equality would be insufficient to uplift those who had been historically oppressed and denied basic human dignity. Therefore, they adopted a transformative approach, blending the liberal ideals of equality and liberty with the socialist principles of distributive justice and affirmative action.
