Definition

Child Helpline 1098 is an emergency outreach service under Mission Vatsalya for children in difficult circumstances. It operates continuously and is integrated with ERSS-112 to support coordinated assistance.

The helpline connects reporting with response and referral; it does not replace the statutory functions of Child Welfare Committees, police or other competent authorities. The 2023 transition and 2026 parliamentary updates provide the institutional context.

Effective protection requires more than an answered call: information must lead to appropriate action, verified referral and continuing care where needed, with the child's circumstances and best interests guiding the process.
