Elder Abuse and Protection — UPSC Importance

Updated 19 Oct 2026

UPSC Importance Analysis

Elder-abuse protection connects social justice with dignity, autonomy and practical security. A narrow focus on visible injury can miss financial exploitation, coercion and neglect. A narrow focus on family responsibility can also miss the role of institutions that provide information, assistance and lawful remedies.

For governance analysis, the central challenge is to coordinate support without erasing the older person's agency. The 2007 Act provides specific mechanisms, but each has conditions and competent authorities. Elderline and other services can help people reach those mechanisms, while a legal order may still require implementation and continuing support.

The topic also tests the quality of evidence. An increase in recorded reports after outreach need not prove an increase in underlying abuse. Global research estimates should not be presented as current Indian prevalence without matching evidence. A strong UPSC answer combines accurate legal anchors with accessible services, fair assessment and verified outcomes, rather than treating publicity, complaint disposal or a single remedy as a complete measure of protection.
