Nutrition programs in India are comprehensive government initiatives designed to combat malnutrition, particularly among vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children under six years of age.

These programs aim to improve health outcomes, enhance cognitive development, and break the intergenerational cycle of undernutrition. At their core, they recognize that nutrition is not merely about providing food, but about ensuring the holistic well-being of individuals, encompassing health, hygiene, and access to essential services.

The approach is multi-faceted, addressing various forms of malnutrition including stunting (low height-for-age), wasting (low weight-for-height), underweight (low weight-for-age), and micronutrient deficiencies (lack of essential vitamins and minerals like iron, iodine, and Vitamin A).

The flagship program, the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme, launched in 1975, serves as the bedrock of India's nutrition strategy. It provides a package of six services: supplementary nutrition, pre-school non-formal education, nutrition and health education, immunization, health check-ups, and referral services.

These services are delivered through a vast network of Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) in both rural and urban areas, acting as community hubs for early childhood care and development. The Anganwadi Workers (AWWs) and Anganwadi Helpers (AWHs) are the frontline functionaries, playing a crucial role in community mobilization, service delivery, and data collection.

Building upon ICDS, the National Nutrition Mission, rebranded as POSHAN Abhiyaan (Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nourishment) in 2018, represents a paradigm shift towards a more targeted, technology-driven, and convergence-based approach.

Its primary goal is to reduce stunting, wasting, and underweight prevalence, and anemia among young children, women, and adolescent girls. POSHAN Abhiyaan emphasizes inter-sectoral convergence, leveraging technology for real-time monitoring, and promoting behavioral change communication (BCC) to foster healthy practices.

The recent POSHAN 2.0, launched in 2021, further consolidates and strengthens existing nutrition programs, aiming for a more integrated and outcome-oriented delivery system.

Another critical intervention is the Mid Day Meal Scheme, now known as PM POSHAN, which provides hot cooked meals to school-going children, addressing both hunger and improving school enrollment and attendance.

Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP) is a key component of ICDS, providing Take Home Rations (THR) for pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children aged 6 months to 3 years, and hot cooked meals for children aged 3-6 years at Anganwadi Centres.

These programs are not standalone initiatives but are designed to work in synergy, creating a robust safety net for the nutritional security of the nation's most vulnerable population segments. The intersection of nutrition and maternal health is explored in detail at Maternal Health Services, highlighting the continuum of care required from conception through early childhood.
