Street Vendors Protection — Definition
Definition
Street-vendor protection in India combines livelihood safeguards with regulation under the Street Vendors Act, 2014, which commenced on 1 May 2014. The framework includes surveys, certificates of vending, participatory Town Vending Committees, planning, duties and grievance mechanisms.
Vendor representation must constitute at least forty percent of the Committee, with one-third of those representatives being women vendors. A vending certificate operates within the applicable conditions and does not itself convey land ownership.
Credit support such as PM SVANidhi addresses a different need. Effective implementation must connect lawful management of shared space with meaningful participation and predictable protection of livelihoods.
