National Human Rights Commission — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For Prelims preparation on NHRC, focus on memorizing specific facts: establishment year (1993), composition details (former CJI as Chairperson), key sections of the Act (Section 3 for composition, Section 12 for powers), amendment years (2006, 2019) and their key changes, one-year limitation period, and exclusion of armed forces from direct jurisdiction.
Create a fact sheet with numerical data: tenure periods, age limits, number of members. Practice elimination techniques by understanding common traps - NHRC cannot punish directly (only recommend), recommendations are not binding, and armed forces require central government approval for investigation.
Pay special attention to 2019 amendment changes as they're frequently tested. Use mnemonics for remembering composition and powers. Regular revision of landmark cases like D.K. Basu is essential as they often appear in statement-based questions.
