Prelims Strategy

For Prelims, the strategy for Human Rights and Civil Liberties (SOC-13) must be highly factual and conceptual. Focus on mastering the exact provisions of Articles 12-35, including their exceptions and limitations.

Pay close attention to the specific rights guaranteed under each article. Memorize the year, key holding, and significance of all landmark Supreme Court judgments mentioned (Maneka Gandhi, ADM Jabalpur, Vishaka, Puttaswamy, Navtej Singh Johar).

Understand the composition, powers, and limitations of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and State Human Rights Commissions (SHRCs), including the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. Be clear on the difference between Fundamental Rights and Directive Principles, and which rights cannot be suspended during an emergency (Articles 20 and 21).

Familiarize yourself with India's ratification status and key provisions of international human rights instruments like UDHR and ICCPR. Vyyuha recommends creating flashcards for article numbers, case names, and their core principles.

Practice MCQs that test conceptual understanding, factual recall, and the ability to differentiate between similar-sounding provisions. Focus on current affairs related to rights, such as new laws (e.g.

, DPDP Act), judicial pronouncements, or government schemes impacting specific rights (e.g., women's safety, disability rights). A strong grasp of these foundational elements will ensure success in Prelims.
