Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on the significance and comparison of meiosis, adopt a multi-pronged strategy. Firstly, create a detailed comparison table between mitosis and meiosis, focusing on key aspects like purpose, number of divisions, daughter cell ploidy, genetic identity, occurrence of synapsis and crossing over, and events in anaphase.

Memorize this table. Secondly, master the changes in chromosome number (n) and DNA content (C) at each stage of meiosis (Prophase I, Metaphase I, Anaphase I, Telophase I, Prophase II, Metaphase II, Anaphase II, Telophase II).

Practice numerical problems involving these changes extensively. A common trap is confusing chromosome number with chromatid number. Remember that after Meiosis I, chromosome number is halved, but each chromosome still has two chromatids.

Thirdly, clearly understand the mechanisms of genetic variation: crossing over (Prophase I) and independent assortment (Metaphase I). Be able to explain how each contributes to diversity. Finally, pay attention to the 'why' – why meiosis is essential for sexual reproduction and evolution.

For conceptual questions, eliminate options that describe mitosis or are factually incorrect about meiosis. For numerical problems, always start by identifying the G1 state (2n, 2C) and then systematically track changes through the meiotic stages.
