Transpiration — Prelims Strategy

Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on transpiration, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, master the core concepts: thoroughly understand the definition, types of transpiration, and the Cohesion-Tension theory.

Secondly, focus on the mechanism of stomatal movement: pay close attention to the K+ ion theory, the role of guard cells' turgor, and the structural adaptations of guard cell walls. Thirdly, memorize and understand the impact of all factors affecting transpiration: light, temperature, humidity, wind, CO2 concentration, and water availability.

Practice identifying how each factor increases or decreases the rate. Fourthly, clearly differentiate transpiration from guttation and evaporation, understanding their distinct mechanisms, conditions, and outcomes.

Fifthly, study plant adaptations to regulate transpiration, especially in xerophytes. For MCQs, carefully read the question and all options. For conceptual questions, break down the scenario and apply the relevant physiological principles.

For questions involving experimental setups (like a potometer), understand what the apparatus measures and what conclusions can be drawn. Be wary of trap options that confuse related but distinct processes or misrepresent the effects of environmental factors.
