Definition

Imagine a tiny power plant inside your cells, specifically within the mitochondria, which are often called the 'powerhouses of the cell.' This power plant's main job is to take the energy from food molecules, which has been partially captured in special 'energy carrier' molecules called NADH and FADH2_2, and convert it into a usable form of energy called ATP. This entire process is known as the Electron Transport System (ETS).

Think of the ETS as a series of tiny steps or 'stations' where electrons are passed from one molecule to another, much like a bucket brigade passing water. These stations are actually protein complexes embedded in the inner membrane of the mitochondria.

As electrons move from one station to the next, they gradually lose energy. This released energy isn't wasted; instead, it's used to pump tiny positively charged particles called protons (H+^+ ions) from one side of the mitochondrial membrane to the other.

This pumping creates a 'dam' of protons, building up a high concentration on one side and a low concentration on the other. This difference in concentration creates a powerful force, similar to water behind a dam, known as the proton motive force.

Now, these protons want to flow back to the side where their concentration is lower, but they can only do so through a specific channel, which is another protein complex called ATP synthase. As protons rush through ATP synthase, it spins like a tiny turbine, and this mechanical energy is used to combine ADP (adenosine diphosphate) with an inorganic phosphate group (Pi_i) to form ATP.

This is the main way our cells generate the vast majority of their energy currency. Oxygen plays a crucial role here; it acts as the final acceptor of electrons at the very end of the chain, combining with protons to form water.

Without oxygen, the entire system would back up, and ATP production would cease, which is why we need to breathe.
