Photoperiodism — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
To effectively tackle NEET questions on photoperiodism, a clear conceptual understanding is paramount. Start by firmly grasping the definitions of Short-Day Plants (SDP), Long-Day Plants (LDP), and Day-Neutral Plants (DNP), along with at least 2-3 classic examples for each category.
Remember that the *uninterrupted dark period* is often the critical factor, not just day length. Pay close attention to how light flashes (especially red and far-red) during the dark period affect flowering in SDPs and LDPs – this is a common trap.
For SDPs, a red light flash inhibits flowering; for LDPs, it promotes it. Understand the interconversion of phytochrome forms ( and ) and which form is active. Practice scenario-based questions where light/dark cycles are manipulated, and you need to predict the flowering outcome.
Create a mental flowchart for each plant type's response to different light conditions. Avoid rote memorization without understanding the 'why' behind the responses, as questions often require application of principles.
