Prelims Strategy

To effectively tackle NEET questions on vegetative propagation, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. First and foremost, memorize the key examples for each type of natural vegetative propagule (e.

g., potato-tuber, ginger-rhizome, onion-bulb, Bryophyllum-leaf buds, water hyacinth-offset, sweet potato-tuberous root). Create flashcards or mnemonics for these. Secondly, understand the basic mechanism and purpose of each artificial method: cutting, layering (ground and air), grafting (scion and stock), and tissue culture (explant, callus, plantlet).

Focus on 'why' each method is used and its specific steps. For conceptual questions, clearly differentiate between the advantages (genetic uniformity, faster propagation, seedless plants) and disadvantages (lack of genetic variation, disease transmission) of vegetative propagation.

Pay close attention to trap options, which often involve confusing similar-looking structures (e.g., rhizome vs. corm vs. tuber) or misattributing a plant to the wrong propagule. Practice identifying the correct method or propagule from a given description or image.

For tissue culture, remember its unique benefits like producing disease-free plants and rapid multiplication. Regular revision of the examples and mechanisms will solidify your understanding and improve recall speed during the exam.
