Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on double fertilisation, a multi-pronged strategy is recommended. Firstly, master the terminology: clearly define syngamy, triple fusion, primary endosperm nucleus, synergids, filiform apparatus, etc.

Secondly, memorize the sequence of events from pollen germination to the formation of the zygote and endosperm. Visual aids like flowcharts or diagrams can be very helpful here. Thirdly, and most critically, understand and recall the ploidy levels of *every* cell and nucleus involved (n, 2n, 3n).

Practice numerical problems where you're given the diploid number of the parent plant and asked to find the chromosome number of the endosperm or zygote. Fourthly, know the functions of each accessory cell (synergids, antipodals) and the pollen tube.

For conceptual questions, focus on identifying the 'cause and effect' relationships. For trap options, be wary of choices that mix up ploidy levels or swap the roles of different cells (e.g., egg cell forming endosperm).

Always read the question carefully, especially negative questions like 'Which is INCORRECT?'. Drawing a quick mental diagram of the embryo sac and pollen tube pathway can help visualize the process and avoid errors.
