Prelims Strategy
To excel in NEET questions on Transgenic Animals, a multi-pronged strategy is essential:
- Master the Examples: — This is the most crucial aspect. Create a table or flashcards linking the transgenic animal (e.g., 'Rosie' cow, sheep, mice) with the specific gene introduced, the product produced, and its application (e.g., human alpha-lactalbumin for nutritional milk, alpha-1-antitrypsin for emphysema, disease models for cancer). Direct recall questions on these examples are very common.
- Understand the 'Why': — Don't just memorize 'what'; understand 'why'. Why are disease models created? (To study disease, test drugs). Why molecular pharming? (To produce therapeutic proteins). This conceptual understanding helps in application-based questions.
- Basic Methodology: — While detailed steps are rare, know the names and basic principles of key gene transfer methods like pronuclear microinjection and the role of embryonic stem cells. Understand that the transgene must be stably integrated into the germline.
- Ethical Dimension: — Prepare for questions on ethical concerns. Focus on animal welfare, potential suffering, and the moral implications of using animals as 'bioreactors' or disease models. Be able to differentiate these from general environmental concerns of GMOs.
- Distinguish from other GMOs: — Clearly differentiate transgenic animals from genetically modified plants or microorganisms. Questions might try to trick you by mixing applications.
- Practice MCQs: — Solve a wide variety of MCQs, including previous year questions, to identify common traps and reinforce your knowledge. Pay attention to options that sound plausible but are incorrect (distractors). For numerical problems (though rare here), ensure units are consistent and calculations are accurate.
