Ecosystem Structure and Function — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
To excel in NEET questions on Ecosystem Structure and Function, a multi-pronged strategy is crucial. Firstly, master the definitions of all key terms: ecosystem, biotic/abiotic components, producers, consumers, decomposers, GPP, NPP, detritus, humus, trophic levels, standing crop, standing state.
Secondly, understand the sequential steps of processes like decomposition (Fragmentation -> Leaching -> Catabolism -> Humification -> Mineralization) and energy flow. Visual aids like flowcharts and diagrams for these processes can be very helpful.
For numerical problems, particularly those involving the 10% law, practice applying the concept diligently. Remember that energy transfer is about 10% at each step, and energy is lost, not gained. Distinguish clearly between energy flow (unidirectional, non-cyclic) and nutrient cycling (cyclic).
Pay attention to factors affecting decomposition (temperature, moisture, chemical composition of detritus). For conceptual questions, focus on the 'why' behind each process and the interdependencies. Avoid common traps like confusing community with ecosystem or misinterpreting the role of decomposers.
Regularly revise examples of different ecosystems and their characteristic features.
