Energy Flow — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
To excel in NEET questions on energy flow, aspirants should adopt a multi-faceted strategy. Firstly, master the fundamental definitions: producers, consumers (primary, secondary, tertiary), decomposers, food chains, and food webs.
Understand the ultimate source of energy (sun) and its unidirectional flow. Secondly, internalize the Laws of Thermodynamics as they apply to ecosystems, especially the Second Law explaining energy loss as heat.
The 10% Law (Lindeman's Law) is critical; practice numerical problems involving energy calculations across different trophic levels. Remember to apply the 10% reduction for *each* step. Thirdly, thoroughly understand ecological pyramids – their types (number, biomass, energy) and their typical shapes, particularly why the pyramid of energy is always upright and when pyramids of number or biomass can be inverted.
Pay close attention to the differences between grazing and detritus food chains. For conceptual questions, focus on distinguishing between energy flow (unidirectional, non-recyclable) and nutrient cycling (recycled matter).
Be wary of trap options that confuse these two concepts or misapply the 10% law. Drawing simple food chains and webs can help visualize the concepts.
